Mission

Established in 1956, the BYU–Hawaii University Archives preserves the history of the institution and promotes fair and balanced historical research. The Archives supports and engages members of diverse communities and respects the legacy of records creators.

Scope of Collections

In addition to university records, the Archives houses historical collections and primary source materials documenting the history of Hawaiʻi, the Pacific, and related communities. Then organize by thematic strengths:

Collection Strengths

• Hawaiʻi, Pacific Island, and Asia-Pacific history and ethnography
• History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaiʻi, the Pacific, and Asia
• History of the Lāʻie community and the Koʻolauloa region of Oʻahu
• Plantation history of Lāʻie and Kahuku
• Latter-day Saint scholarship and historiography relating to Hawaiʻi, the Pacific, and East Asia

• Manuscripts
• Photographs
• Audio and audiovisual recordings
• Approximately 1,500 Polynesian and Asian artifacts

Set an Appointment

Visit us at the Joseph F. Smith Library to learn more about the Church College of Hawaii, Brigham Young University–Hawaii, the community of Laie, and the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Asia and the Pacific.

Both walk-in and scheduled appointment visits are available, Monday - Friday between 9 am and 4:30 pm. Appointments can be scheduled by phone (808) 675-3868 or email archives@byuh.edu.

Requests will be accommodated as staff is able, and we suggest contacting the archives at least 24-48 hours in advance of your desired appointment time.
