Raymond Vaught, musician and professor, dies at 86. Raymond Vaught, a respected and influential force in the Hawaii music and opera scene, died Monday, Jan 10, 2000 in Honolulu. He was 86. Vaught was a music professor at the University of Hawaii from 1955 until his retirement in 1979. He played the violin with the Honolulu Symphony from 1956 to 1987. He created the University of Hawaii early music program, Collegium Musicum, and he founded the Honolulu String Quartet. Vaught was a music and drama reviewer for The Honolulu Advetiser. Vaught also was an early member of the Honolulu Chamber Music Group, the forerunner of the Honolulu Chamber Music Series. After his retirement, he continued to lecture on opera and play the violin.

"He was Mr. Music in Hawaii," said Jim Becker, with the Hawaii Opera Theatre. "Gosh he was a wonderful man. He was generous with his time and his knowledge and his expertise. Just a lovely guy." Becker gives previews at opera functions, which were regularly attended by Vaught. "I was probably wrong half the time, and he never once used his superior knowledge. He would just be encouraging and say what a great job you’re doing, " Becker said. Honolulu Symphony violinist Claire Hazzard first met Vaught nearly 40 years ago when he was a solo/ensemble adjudicator and she was a music student. Years later at the University of Hawaii, Hazzard played in a quartet with Vaught. The two maintained a friendship since. "Raymond always tried to be positive and I use that word a lot," she said. "He was encouraging, supportive and a very positive force for music in our community." Vaught was born in Monett, Mo., and received degrees at the University of Idaho and Stanford University. In 1938, he married cellist Kathryn Kennard, and the couple had two daughters. The family moved to Hawaii in 1956 when Vaught took an assistant professor of music job at UH. Kathryn Vaught died in 1964, and daughter, Susan, died in 1995. Raymond Vaught married Marion Newbury in 1967, and the two continued the Vaught musical tradition in Hawaii. In addition to Marion, Vaught is survived by daughter, Kathleen Farner; brothers, Charles and Daryl; and sister, Jane Thompson. At his request, there will be no services.
