Walter Foulke Judd poured his lifelong interest in history into books he wrote about Hawaii's past. And he took his avocation beyond words into activism that helped keep the past alive. Judd spearheaded a 1960s effort that saved Iolani Barracks from demolition and later served as chairman of the committee that directed restoration of Iolani Palace in the 1970s. As a Hawaii Air National Guard officer, he worked to create the Royal Guard, a ceremonial unit modeled after King Kalakaua's household guard.

Judd, a Kaneohe resident, died Nov. 20, 2000 at the age of 81. He was born on Molokai, great-grandson of Dr. Gerrit P. Judd, a physician who arrived in Hawaii in the early 19th century with the first New England missionaries. Judd served in the 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II and continued to serve in the National Guard until retirement as a colonel 30 years ago. He pushed for the creation of the Royal Guard, a volunteer unit of National Guard members of Hawaiian ancestry, which he described in a 1980 interview as "a tangible expression of pride in our Hawaiian heritage, and to be something by which the people of today could see something of yesterday." The Royal Guard is now a familiar sight in parades and ceremonies. The formation of the unit in 1963 coincided with another successful effort through which the state Legislature agreed to save the barracks which the old guard once occupied. The structure, which predated Iolani Palace, was moved to the palace grounds from its original location at the site of the state Capitol. Next came restoration of Iolani Palace, which had housed the state Legislature. "He loved it, it fitted in with his life interest in history," said Jean Judd, his wife of 51 years. He headed the restoration committee when the basic work of refurbishing the interior was under way. "That was before they added furniture," she said. "They got an artist who made lyres to carve the uprights for the stairway banister."

Jean Judd said her husband was thwarted in one foray into personal history. "He was interested in finding out where the first Judd came from in England. We went to England eight or nine times ... but he never traced it completely." In addition to his wife, Judd is survived by daughter Victoria Hill; sister Rita Judd of Del Mar, Calif., and two granddaughters. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Oahu Cemetery. The family asks that flowers be omitted and informal attire be worn.
