Florence Iwamoto, co-founder of Robert’s Hawaii Tours, died Tuesday, March 2, 2000 in Kuakini Hospital after suffering a stroke. Iwamoto, 82, was born and raised in Lihue, Kauai. In 1945, she and her husband, the late Robert Iwamoto Sr., founded the Robert’s company. She retired in 1985. Robert’s Hawaii Tours started with five rental cars that doubled as taxis on Kauai. As the company grew rapidly, limousines also became part of the business. In 1960 the company purchased its first buses and seven years later began operations on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island with the familiar rabbit logo on the back of the vehicles. The business became one of Hawaii’s largest tour companies. Robert Sr. died in 1984 after a long battle with cancer. The company is run today by their son, Robert Jr. Florence Iwamoto, who was known as a tireless worker with a big heart, enjoyed gardening and was active in the Lihue Senior Center until her death, according to her daughter, Linda Uohara of Lihue. Survivors include a brother, Motomo Onishi; a sister, Chieko Takeuchi; sons Robert Jr., Sonny and Allan; daughters Arleen Contrades and Linda Uohara; 27 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Lihue Hongwanji Mission. Casual attire is requested.
