Antonio T. Rania, 91, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., former president of Local 142 of the International Longshoreman’s and Warehouseman’s Union, died Monday Mar 10, 1997 in California. Rania testified at the 1953 Hawaii trial of seven islanders charged with a Communist conspiracy against the United States. In his 15 years as head of the union, Rania was proud of what the ILWU achieved for Filipinos. Born in the Philippines, he is survived by daughters Estrellita R. William F. “Bill” Remular, 63, of Waipahu, an architect, businessman and public official, led a many-sided life that also included service as a Navy officer. Remular, who died Feb. 12, 1997 in St. Francis Hospice after a long illness, was born in Santa Monica, Calif. He moved here in 1948. He was graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1951 and later from the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s in architecture. He then entered Navy service, going through Officers Candidate School. He was commissioned an ensign with the Civil Engineer Corps, eventually attaining the rank of commander. He later took over his father’s import business, involving products of Lorenzana Food Corp. of Manila, and was named “Small Businessman of the Year” by the Filipino Chamber of Commerce here. A registered architect and corporate member of the American Institute of Architects, he worked for several architectural firms and as a civilian with Headquarters, U.S. Pacific Air Forces. Later, he served as deputy director of the city Building Department under both Mayors Eileen Anderson and Frank Fasi. His public service also included time on the state Board of Registration of Professional Engineers, Architects, Surveyors and Landscape Architects. He is survived by wife Adoracion G. “Dee”; sons Billy G., Steven G. and Paul G., daughter Terri Gangwes and 11 grandchildren. George Roberts, Hawaii port director for the U.S. Customs Service, died Sunday Aug 31, 1997 morning at Castle Hospital. Roberts, 89, was the country’s oldest and longest-serving federal employee on active duty, the federal government said. He spent the last two decades as district director and area port director. Roberts first came to Hawaii in 1930 as an Army sergeant in the military police stationed at Fort Shafter. In 1935, he became Honolulu customs inspector. Roberts was appointed district director of customs for Hawaii in 1977. When he turned 70 the following year, his service was extended beyond the mandatory retirement age by then-President Jimmy Carter.  The mandatory retirement age for federal employees was abolished the next year.
