Harper Richards  -  Architect and designer Harper Richards left his Hawaii friends a legacy of his artistic abilities.  In the 20 years since he retired to the islands, he painted dozens of portraits and scenic watercolors that have been displayed in Honolulu art exhibits.  Before retirement, he was with Raymond Lowey industrial designers of New York and established Harper Richards Associates of Chicago. His designs ranged from sleek buses for Trailways and Greyhound to glass coffee pots.  Among his architectural designs were the penthouse suite of the Ambassador East hotel and the offices of many top businessmen in Chicago.  The architect's work best known to Honolulu residents was the sprawling white Connors home across the front of Round Top which is visible from much of the city.  Richards, 88, died Friday Sep 27 Harper Richards at home.  "He was an adventurer. There was a special touch in everything he did," said his daughter  Holly Richards. She recalled that in 1959, Richards and his wife packed up their family and 22 pieces of luggage and spent a year traveling around the world on freighters.  After his first wife died, he spent six months each year roam  ing the country in a trailer, with paints and canvas to record what he saw. "When he ran into an ocean, he'd get on an airplane and fly to Bora Bora or maybe Bali," his daughter said.  David Eyre said his friend had a flair for life and was a strong believer in the axiom that "all work and no play make Jack a dull boy."  "He'd traveled all over the world, and chose to retire in Hawaii. He loved the islands. He identified with the music," Eyre said.  In 1978, Richards married Hawaii author Mary Castro Fitzsimmons and the two traveled extensively, sketchbooks in hand, Eyre said.  Richards was born in Greenville, Miss., and graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He is survived by his wife Mary; daughter Holly; son Balbir Singh Khalsa; stepdaughter Melainie Fitzsimmons; stepson Jeff Fitzsimmons; and four grandchildren.  Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at Sacred Heart Church. A funeral Mass will follow. The family suggests aloha attire.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Shepherd's Outreach Program at First United Methodist Church, or the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, Box 1619, Kailua 96734.      [SB 02/10/1996]
