Alvin K. “ Uncle Barney”  Isaacs Jr. of Honolulu, the Hawaii steel guitarist who died  Monday, Feb. 12, 1996  in Queen’s Hospital will be remembered in services March 2, 1996.  Isaacs, 71, was born in Honolulu.  He is survived by wife “Cookie”Puanani Isaacs III; son Alvin K. “Tripp” III;  and sisters Judy Mahuka, Shirley Medeiros,  Faith Boyd and Arma Martin. “Uncle Barney” as he was known, to many, is praised as one of the few remaining traditional steel guitar virtuosas. He graduated from Punahou High School and attended the University of Hawaii.  Barney was a regular on the famed radio show  “Hawaii Calls” and has played at night spots such as  Don the Beachcomber’s, the Barefoot Bar of the Queen’s Surf; the Top of the I at the Ilikai Hotel, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Moana and Halekulani Hotels and for many years as the musical director  for Danny Kaleikini at the Kahala Hilton Hotel.   He was also a member of the Kani Ka Pila Golf Club, American Legion, Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club, Musicians Association of Hawaii, Local No. 677 (on which he served for many years on the Board of Directors), Elks BPOE Lodge 616 and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.  Burial: Diamond Head Memorial  Park.  [SB 16/02/1996]

Charles Kiyoharu Izumoto , age 78  of Honolulu, passed away Saturday, Feb. 17, 1996  at his home.  He was born  July 1, 1917 in Honolulu.  He is survived by wife Toshimi Y.;  son, Charles J. “Chuck”  (Audrey); grandchildren Jane and Charles Izumoto.  A retired manager at the Honolulu service office  of Omaha Insurance Company, he chaired and was a member of the State Civil Service Commission 1963-1973, Public Employees Compensation Appeals Board 1963-1973, City Planning Commission, 1975-1980, member of the Mayor’s Salary Commission 1975,  a temporary member of the City Civil Service Commision in 1991.  He also served in the Military Intelligence in WW II and on various community service groups and civic organizations.
